Hitit University's 2025 Carbon Footprint Assessment Report Published

Hitit University’s Sustainability Office has released its Carbon Footprint Assessment Report, presenting the greenhouse gas emissions profile of the North Campus. Dated April 2026, the report evaluates the campus’s 2025 emissions under three main categories: direct emissions, energy-related indirect emissions, and other indirect emissions. The study emphasizes that university campuses, due to their population density, energy consumption, and diverse operational activities, hold strategic importance in advancing environmental sustainability.

According to the report, Hitit University North Campus recorded a total carbon footprint of 4,992.365 tons of CO2e per year in 2025. Of this total, approximately 47.21% resulted from Scope 1 emissions, 46.50% from Scope 2 emissions, and 6.29% from Scope 3 emissions. The report identifies natural gas used for heating and purchased electricity consumption as the two main sources of emissions. In addition, campus transportation, leased vehicles, water consumption, and waste generation were also included in the assessment.

The report also outlines a number of recommendations aimed at strengthening the campus’s sustainability performance. These include the implementation of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System to reduce energy use systematically, the installation of a solar power plant on campus, the modernization of existing lighting infrastructure through LED fixtures and motion sensors, the promotion of public transportation and bicycle use, and the establishment of a more structured institutional system for data monitoring and reporting. It is further noted that training programs, seminars, and awareness-raising activities for students and staff will play an important role in supporting emission reduction efforts.

In line with its sustainability vision, Hitit University aims to monitor its environmental impacts through scientific data, improve efficiency in resource use, and implement pioneering practices in the fight against climate change. The report also underlines the University’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, in alignment with Türkiye’s 2053 net-zero target.
